A Question Never Asked:Why were the Israelites Enslaved in Egypt?

Featuring Prof. Yair Zakovitch

The Bible usually tells us why bad things happen, but no explanation is given for why the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt for 400 years. The absence of an explanation does not mean that the biblical writers did not supply answers: in this lecture, we will uncover the different explanations that the Bible gives for this national catastrophe.

Yair Zakovitch is the Emeritus Father Takeji Otsuki Professor of Bible at the Hebrew University. In 2021, he will receive the prestigious Israel Prize in Biblical Studies. At the Hebrew University, Prof. Zakovitch served as Dean of Humanities, Head of the Department of Bible, and Head of the Institute of Jewish Studies. He has taught at academic institutions throughout the United States and Europe, including Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, University of California at Berkeley, University of Notre Dame, Columbia University, The Jewish Theological Seminary, the Pontifical Gregorian University and University of Erlangen. In Israel, Professor Zakovitch is a well known lecturer, teaching regularly at teachers’ seminars and continuing education programs, as well as appearances on radio and television.

TICKING THE CLOCK BACKWARDS: From Transforming Skin Cells into Medically-Relevant Cell Types, to Future Cell Rejuvenation Therapy

Featuring Prof. Yosef (Yossi) Buganim

Prof. Yosef (Yossi) Buganim is an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Buganim received his undergraduate degrees from Bar-Ilan University and a Ph.D. degree from Weizmann Institute of Science. His postdoctoral training on nuclear reprogramming techniques he conducted at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, MIT.

Buganim was the first to generate induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) without “Yamanaka’s factors” and his own group is pioneering the conversion of skin cells into placental stem cells and was the first to demonstrate the induction of all the three blastocyst cell types with one combination of factors. Currently, the Buganim’s lab is focused on developing new paradigms to convert skin cells into various medically-relevant cell types and to improve the current models for future clinical use. Buganim has received many international grants and awards.
