Lisbon 2013

The 8th European conference of the Hebrew University took place in Lisbon from October 10 to 13, 2013.  

This year’s topic “The Explorers of Knowledge:  Discoveries, Perspectives, Influences” offered a wide range of panel discussions about Judaism in Portugal, the Marranos, Science, Religion, International Economics and Finance thanks to the participation of leading European speakers such as Professors Henri Atlan, Arnold Munnich, Rabbi Haim Korsia, and Hebrew University experts Professors Ruth Fine, Amir Amedi, Re’em Sari, Yosef Kaplan and many more…

Guests were welcomed on Thursday at the splendid privatized National Palace of Ajuda where the cocktail evening ended with a beautiful recital by Fado singer Cuca Roseta who enchanted the guests by her delicate voice and emotion. Please click here to view the pictures of the welcome reception.

Hosted in the sumptuous Pestana Palace Hotel and gardens, this 8th European Conference offered the guests a relaxing and sunny break where intellectual stimulation, tourism, convivial exchanges and festive evenings met.  On Saturday night, the participants of the Conference met together with the Art Circle Belgian Friends of the Hebrew University and local guests at the Ritz Four Seasons hotel for a Gala evening followed by a concert of Klezmer which led the merry guests to gather on the dance floor.  The Ambassador of Israel, H.E Tzipora Rimon, Knesset members, Secretary of State Carlos Moedas also attented this friendly evening along with TV political commentator Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Mrs Maria João Salgado, President of the Portuguese Friends of the Hebrew University, and her husband M.  Ricardo Salgado, Chairman of the Espirito Santo Bank were also part of the guests of honor.

On Sunday 13, the plenary sessions closed the conference with a presentation of the works of Albert Einstein by Hebrew University specialist Prof. Hanoch Gutfreund and ended with a panel discussion about The Science of Tomorrow with the participation of notable Portuguese neurosurgeon Prof.   João Lobo Antunes.
